Reconstruction of the armor of Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović located in XOPYC - HORUS store

modeled after the armor type 'CHURBURG #13' (1360 - 1390) from the collection located in Churburg Castle, Italy.

The reconstruction project for Prince Lazar's armor proved to be an extremely challenging task due to the lack of direct data and surviving examples of the armor he wore. Therefore, we relied on historical facts from the required period (1388 - 1389), including motifs from rings, preserved burial gowns, seals, frescoes, sarcophagi, the coat of arms from Fojnica, records of trade with the Venetian Republic, and more.

The armor features a PARADE helmet known as the 'Great Helm' with a crest, adorned with golden motifs of mythological creatures inspired by the burial gown and golden ox horns. Helmets with horns and similar symbols such as swans, hands, fists, dragons, lions, horses, and other motifs that can be seen as effigies today were never used in combat. In this case, the helmet design and the horn motif were derived from the button found on Lazar's burial gown. Such helmets were exclusively reserved for ceremonial purposes and not intended for combat.

Why Churburg number 13? During the late 14th century, it represented the pinnacle of armor technology. The development of weapons and armor throughout history has closely mirrored the development we witness today. Better weapons necessitated the creation of superior armor, and vice versa. Hence, precise typologies of armor, swords, helmets, jackets, shields, and clothing exist for specific periods and regions/styles.

Is this armor an exact replica of what Prince Lazar wore? The answer is NO because we cannot confirm the exact details of his attire. However, this reconstructed armor is historically accurate and represents what a prince of that time would most likely wear. The details, colors, symbols, finish, and choice of materials are our interpretation. This is the armor that we envision creating for Prince Lazar during that era.
